At AIB Off Grid, we’re a family-owned business committed to helping homesteaders and farmers achieve true independence with reliable, affordable solar power. Founded by Bernhard Aufderklamm, an electro-mechanical engineer from northern Italy, and his wife, Vania, a Pennsylvania native and homeschooling mother of three, our journey began with a dream: to build a homestead in the Missouri Ozarks where our children could grow up connected to nature, just as Bernhard did on his family’s dairy farm in Italy.
Our move to the Ozarks in 2020 came with challenges, including the high cost of connecting to the electric grid in a remote area. With Bernhard’s 20 years of experience as an electro-mechanical prototype engineer, we decided to create our own solution. He built our first off-grid solar system for under $10,000—a fraction of the price of standard systems—and it provided all the power we needed for our 700 sq ft home, including AC.
Seeing the impact this had on our family’s life, we wanted to help our neighbors do the same. We understand the unique needs of those living off-grid; that’s why Bernhard builds each solar system by hand, right here on our farm. Our systems feature highly durable, temperature-controlled steel enclosures, specially designed to protect batteries from harsh elements (because we know your house might not have insulation when you first move in!), ensuring they last longer and perform better, even if they’re set-up in a hot garage or workshop.
Our mission is simple: to empower fellow homesteaders and farmers to be self-sufficient and free from high utility costs.
